Robin Finch Pickering - The Collapsing Department

February - Ongoing

Robin Finch Pickering is an artist who graduated from Camberwell’s BA Fine Art: Painting in 2022. Robin exhibited at Camberwell Space from February to March 2024 after winning the Vanguard Prize. We have an ongoing commitment to longer term relationships with the artists and designers that we have worked with. We’re really pleased to become the first custodians for Robin’s work, The Collapsing Department.

Robin's work consists of a table handmade from found hardwoods and laminate offcuts, forming a hinged concertina structure on wheels, with doubled-sided interchangeable Formica panels. This allows it to move, grow and shrink to fit its function. Robin describes the artwork as ‘living furniture’. The Collapsing Department exists in the balance of encouraging speculation and adaptation.

The concept behind this artwork is similar to a travelling circus, with the purpose of bringing people together, inspiring spontaneous activities and learning and expanding as needed to different environments. We’re interested in fostering local partnerships around our local community of Camberwell and Peckham.

The design of each panel comes from Robin’s ongoing research into:

  • patterns
  • colour combinations
  • unexpected moments of repetition
  • design elements.

For ease of transport and storage, the table comes in its own portable box, designed and built by Robin.

If you’re interested in contributing to the life of the table, get in touch: publicprogramme@arts.ac.uk.

Some suggestions for ways in which to work with us might include:

  • loaning the table for workshops or events
  • commissioning Robin to create new panels
  • working with Robin on the development of a workshop, activity or event.
