Returning student enrolment

When to enrol

You must enrol each academic year to continue your course. When it's time for you to enrol we'll send you an email with instructions on what to do.

Enrolment for returning students opens from Monday 4 August 2025, but not everyone gets invited to enrol straight away.

  • We send invitations out in batches, so you might get your email at a different time to other people on your course.
  • Check your UAL email inbox regularly.

You must complete online registration and receive your enrolment confirmation before the enrolment deadline for your course.

  • Complete the online registration step of enrolment as soon as you're eligible.
  • It can take up to 5 working days for your online registration to be reviewed.
  • It may take longer for your enrolment to be confirmed if something is missing or incorrect upon review.

How to enrol

Step 1: Online registration

This is where you provide all the information we need to enrol you. This should be familiar to you from last year.

  • When uploading documents and images, make sure you add your Student ID number at the start of the file name.

You'll need to (where applicable):

  1. check your passport upload and let us know about any changes
  2. check your visa and immigration documentation and let us know about any changes
  3. pay your tuition fees or provide confirmation of your funding arrangements.

You won’t be able to delete previous versions of any documents. UAL is required to keep a full record of your enrolment while you study with us.

Step 2: Enrolment confirmation

Once you've submitted your online registration, we'll check your information to make sure we have everything we need to complete your enrolment.

  • We aim to make all of our checks within 5 working days, but it may take a little longer during busier times.
  • Please be patient. We'll contact you as soon as we can.

Email confirmation

If we're able to complete your enrolment, we'll send you an email confirmation.

Enrolment on hold

If anything is missing from your online registration, or something is incorrect - your enrolment will be paused. We'll email you detailing what you must do next. Please check your inbox regularly.

Starting the next year of your course

To start the next year of your course you must:

  • complete online registration and
  • receive confirmation of your enrolment by the enrolment deadline.

After Step 1 above, you can continue to use your Student ID card and attend on-site.

You must still provide any missing documentation or make any corrections to finalise your enrolment by the enrolment deadline.

Check your inbox regularly. We'll email you instructions about what you must do next.

Enrolment deadlines

Submit your online registration as early as possible. Any delay could mean we are unable to confirm your enrolment before the enrolment deadline.

The deadline to enrol for returning undergraduate and postgraduate students in 2025 is 3 weeks after your course start date.

This includes courses such as:

  • BA, BSc
  • MA, MRes, MSc
  • MPhil, PhD.

Your course start date is when teaching begins for your course. Welcome week is not included.

It's important you arrive for the start of teaching for your course. Attendance is a key contributor to successful studies and we'd like to ensure you get the most out of your time at UAL.

Help and support

Resubmitting, retaking and repeating study

If you have to resubmit work at the end of the summer, your results are usually available in September.

  • You will not be invited to re-enrol until your results are available.
  • Think carefully before committing to travel or accommodation arrangements when you’re required to resubmit work, in case you fail and are required to retake units.

International students

Contact the Student Advice Service as soon as you receive your results. They’ll explain what this means for your visa.

Returning after time out

We'll send a re-enrolment email to your UAL email address:

  • Full Year Out: during the summer before you are due to return.
  • Partial Year Out: 4-6 weeks before you are due to return.

Read more about returning from time out in this Student Guide to Requesting Time Out (PDF 210KB).

Returning from Exchange, Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) or Creative Computing Institute Diploma

Read more about work placements or other UAL sandwich year diplomas.

We'll send a re-enrolment email to your UAL email address during the summer before you are due to return for the next academic year.

Extending your Student visa

If your visa does not cover the extended length of your course including your Exchange or Diploma, you’ll need to apply to extend your visa. Usually you’ll apply after you have completed your exchange or diploma year, before you return for the final year of your course.
