technē Studentships

UAL is a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) technē Doctoral Training Partnership. technē welcomes both interdisciplinary research proposals and those focused within traditional discipline areas.

Eligibility

  • Home and International fee status students can apply to technē. You will be fee assessed after you apply to UAL - find out more about Fee Status
  • technē is open to students who have already started their doctoral study, students must have at least 50% of the period of their PhD remaining at the time they start the studentship.
  • Students must be resident in the UK for the duration of the award.

technē brings together UAL and 8 other universities in London and the southeast of England to provide studentships and training for the contemporary postgraduate researcher in a fully-formed programme for academic, professional and early career development.

technē welcomes both interdisciplinary research proposals and those focused within traditional discipline areas, and around 50 new awards, covering tuition fees and maintenance (depending on eligibility), are made each year across the consortium for a range of arts and humanities disciplines.

Apply

The application process is different if you are a current UAL student from a new applicant.

Current UAL postgraduate research student:

  • Submit an initial application to the techne application portal by the 19 January 2025 deadline.
  • Ensure you read the Students Applying to techne guidance document on the techne application portal technē  when drafting an application.
  • Feedback and instructions will be provided to applicants selected to go forward to the external technē panel.

Applicants that do not yet have a place at UAL and are aiming to start a research degree in September 2025:

  • Applicants wishing to apply for technē funding with UAL to commence September 2025 must first apply for a research degree at UAL by the 10 November 2024 deadline to start the UAL application process.
  • Interviews are offered in early December.
  • Applicants who then receive and accept an offer of a place at UAL are eligible to apply for technē funding. You must submit an initial application on the techne application portal by the 19 January 2025 deadline.
  • Ensure you read the Students Applying to techne guidance document on the technē application portal when drafting an application.
  • Feedback and instructions will be provided to applicants selected to go forward to the external techne panel.

Receiving payment

  • The awards covers up to 3.5 years (42 months) for a full time student; or 7 years (84 months) for a part-time student (50% of maintenance). This  length of the award is pro rata if you have already started your PhD.
  • A tax-free maintenance stipend to pay your living costs. This is currently set at £21,237 (£10,618.50 part time) per year.
  • Up to £1,750 of additional funding over the course of your award to cover study trips, facilities, access to resources etc.
  • All technē funded students must submit their thesis during their funded period and by their funding end date.

Tuition fees

Home students: your University tuition fees are paid at the rate for Home students. These are paid in full directly to your University.

International students: a contribution based on the tuition fee rate for Home students. The contribution is paid directly to your University, you will be required to pay the remaining balance.
