This online workshop has been designed to explore ways for teachers to help students develop digital research and presentation skills. We will be taking inspiration from the large and varied collection at Chatsworth House, using art and artefacts from the estate to inspire participants to create work that explores how to make visual connections through the research and development process.

Delivered during 1 day over 2 sessions, the first session will provide an introduction to the house, its history and a selection of varied objects from the collection. The workshop will also introduce a range of simple techniques for exploring ideas from easily found materials.

This activity is both about creating work independently and working collaboratively with others, linking an initial research theme with an evolving investigation and providing evidence through a visual narrative of how this has informed ideas. You will be asked to complete the project between the first and second sessions.

The second session will provide a platform for the sharing of research development and project progress and consider how you can use these techniques to encourage students to effectively document visual connections in the presentation of research and ideas.

About the facilitators

Kerry Fernandez

Kerry Fernandez trained and practiced in Visual Communication and Graphic Design before becoming a lecturer. She has taught on the Graphic Design and Illustration degree at Sheffield Hallam University and spent many years at Chesterfield College teaching Visual Communication on the Level 4 Foundation course, and Level 3 Diploma.  Here she was cross-college mentor in Outstanding OFSTED practice and internal moderator for the UAL qualifications.

Kerry has maintained her freelance graphic design practice, working with clients nationwide, and works as an External Advisor for Sheffield Hallam University and UAL.  She currently works as the Arts Engagement officer for the Devonshire Educational Trust at Chatsworth House; working with schools, colleges and universities on specialist art projects, and delivering a range of art and design skills to support delivery of the curriculum and course units.

Sarah Atkinson

With over 30 years of experience working in further and higher education and an MA, BA and PGCE, Sarah Atkinson designed, delivered and managed creative arts course at UAL. Instigating strategies to improve teaching, learning and assessment, both in the UK and with educational institutions worldwide as part of the international team at LCF.

She was asked to contribute to the setting up of UAL Awarding Body, and subsequently became a member of the Senior Management Team, helping to develop the suite of qualifications and leading the team of Chief Examiners as Head of Academic Standards, before deciding to leave full time work last year.

She is now an academic consultant with projects ranging from setting up an academy for creative education in India to advising the DFE on new qualifications, while continuing to support the work of UAL Awarding Body as a Senior Moderator and maintaining her own creative practice.
