Visiting UAL at National Portfolio Day
How do National Portfolio Day events work?
You will have a one-to-one meeting with an academic representative from UAL, lasting around 7-10 minutes.
This is not a competition or examination, it is an opportunity for you to get advice on how to improve your portfolio and ask questions about any programs of study you are interested in.
Make sure you do the following before attending an event:
- Register for the National Portfolio Day event you would like to attend, whether it is an in-person or online one.
- Make sure you come prepared for your meeting, by knowing your own work and researching which courses you’re interested in.
- Include at least 10 to 12 pieces of work in your portfolio to present.
- Portfolios can be physical or digital. If you’re bringing a digital portfolio, make sure you have a laptop or tablet to present your work to the reviewers.

What should I prepare before attending an in-person National Portfolio Day event?
- Bring a portfolio of visual artwork that includes your best and most recent work, along with work in progress, sketchbooks and tear sheets.
- Be prepared to explain how you develop your ideas and where you want to go with them. Sharing your process work can be as valuable as presenting the finished piece.
- Your portfolio can be presented as original work or in digital form but note that WiFi may not be available at all locations.
- Students who are not ready to show a portfolio can still attend to gather information form college/university academic representatives.
What should I prepare before attending an online National Portfolio Day event?
- Prepare a digital portfolio to share with reviewers. You will be meeting with a reviewer via Zoom, and will have the opportunity to share your screen and show your portfolio directly from your computer.
- Make sure your digital portfolio includes your best and most recent work. Also include work in progress sketches and tear sheets. This can be 10-12 pieces of work in 1 or 2 PDF files with a max size of 50MB each.
- Be prepared to explain how you develop your ideas and where you want to go with them. Sharing your process work can be as valuable as presenting the finished piece.
