Intermediate Jewellery Short Course

Course description

If you have already covered the basic technical exercises in learning how to make jewellery, the Intermediate Jewellery Short Course will guide you into practical workshop experience in a confident way. Students will explore and expand their jewellery design ideas in the workshops with practical and design guidance.

You will receive advice on sourcing tools and materials, further research sources and further courses that may be suitable to build on your skills and particular interests.

Course outcomes

By the end of this course students should have:

  • Have learned how to make chain jewellery using mainly sterling silver.
  • An introduction to basic chain making, where you will make your own chain bracelet.
  • Learned how to create coils, cut links, solder them, and add texture using hammering techniques.
  • Learned how to make a T-bar clasp and attach it securely to your chain.
  • Explored flush stone setting, melted silver to create small nugget shapes and learned how to set stones securely using professional tools.
  • Soldered earring posts or bails and polished your finished pieces.
  • Designed and made your own piece of jewellery using the techniques you’ve learned.
  • Received individual support and advice to help complete your design within the time available.
  • Created a final polish of your work and engaged in group discussion to share what you’ve made.

Level: Intermediate

Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older

Please bring with you to the first session:

  • An apron
  • Sketchbook
  • Pencils
  • Eraser
  • Sensible footwear ie. no 'open toe' sandals
  • Hair band (if you have long hair).
