Course description

Visual Communication brings together many different specialist areas, including illustration, typography and photography; we will explore them individually, and see how to put them together for the greatest impact. As well as the creative process, we will look at software and production. A practical assignment will be set, to be discussed next session.

  • Basic knowledge of the practical use of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop

  • Theories, including: figure-ground theory – Gestalt, message theory, culture-dependent theory and semiotics
  • Focusing on your audience, and the context of design
  • Layout principles including the rule of thirds, golden section and hierarchy of information
  • Typography including letterpress
  • Colour principles
  • Branding
  • Information design
  • Accessibility in design
  • Generating concepts, and the importance of starting with analogue means
  • The importance of ideas before considering technique
  • Production
  • An introductory demonstration and discussion of Adobe Creative Cloud as the industry standard software

Materials

In order to fully participate in the practical exercises, please have the following materials/equipment for the first class:

  • A notepad and a pen
  • A modern computer with an up-to-date operating system
  • An up-to-date web browser (Google Chrome is recommended)
  • A microphone (a headset with microphone/headphones is recommended)
  • Headphones
  • Webcam

Finally, a good broadband connection is also essential (mobile data 3G/4G or a mobile dongle might not provide sufficient bandwidth).
