This short intensive course explores some unconventional, versatile and inventive approaches to patternmaking and shape creation. It will show you snapshots of various techniques used to create patterns.

Tutor-led demonstrations will provide the starting point from which to practice and develop your skills and aesthetic sensibilities.

Who this course is for

This course is suitable for students with a basic understanding of pattern cutting. The ability to use a sewing machine is essential if you are to benefit from this course.

Some knowledge of patternmaking would also be useful to follow this program. It is also essential that you come to this course with an open mind, be willing to experiment and take risks.

Students who successfully complete this course may want to consider taking Experimental and Explorative Approaches Part 2.

  • New techniques for process led design and pattern making and make your own contoured style with demonstrations and development of 3-D details
  • Creating a pattern for this garment you have chosen or designed (using professional instruments and guidance to ensure your pattern fits together perfectly)

  • Seam placement and ease, fullness and darting, creating your shape and pattern
