The special effects industry is diverse and fast-paced, with an ever-growing need for a blend of technical expertise, artistic skills, and innovation. If you are looking to enter or advance in this field, honing specialised skills in special effects makeup can provide a strong career path.
This 10-week Complete Special Effects Makeup Short Course introduces students to sculpting techniques as well as special effects makeup. Students will gain an insight into how to create simple prosthetics, apply and colour them as well as how to use direct applied makeup effects materials.
During the course students will have access to specialist rooms at LCF East Bank that are designed for carrying out the processes and skills required to create prosthetics safely. The new state-of-the-art rooms comprise of a sculpting room, silicone and cap plastic laboratory, resin room, sanding and flocking and latex studio, as well as a fully equipped hair and makeup room for applying SFX makeup.
Throughout the course, students explore sculpting, mould-making and applying prosthetics, amongst other techniques needed to create SFX makeup looks. These are key skills and techniques required to thrive in the film, TV, theatre and performance industries.

Who this course is for
This course is aimed at anyone with an interest in special effects makeup, makeup artists who need some SFX skills top-up, or anyone looking to create the beginnings of a portfolio showcasing SFX skills with ambitions of pursuing special effects makeup artistry further. There are no entry requirements for this course.

- Session 1 - Induction and Cuts / lacerations / grazing / scarring / skin disorders / creating direct applied effects using a variety of materials
- Session 2 - Anatomy Sculpting
- Session 3 - Sculpting Textures / started sculpting a wound
- Session 4 - Creating a Silicone Flat Mould, De-Moulding and Cleaning Mould
- Session 5 - Prepping Silicone Mould, Encapsulating and casting an appliance
- Session 6 - Applying Silicone appliances, Filling Mould with Pro-Bondo
- Session 7 - Applying Pro-Bondo Pieces, Black eyes and bruising effects Techniques for creating bruising and swelling
- Session 8 - Making Simple cap plastic eyebrow covers
- Session 9 - Blocking out Eyebrows
- Session 10 - Project Finale: Applying what you have learned to create a full cohesive SFX look with the opportunity to photograph it

Please note: students are advised to remove any permanent eyelash extensions before the course starts, to ensure they are able to complete full makeup looks.
Tutor
Franky Lehmeier
Franky has been teaching at the University of the Arts London for over ten years for the BA (HON) Hair, Make-up, and Prosthetics for Performance course. Despite Franky's passion for Prosthetics, Franky also has a passion for teaching, and throughout her time at UAL she has done a "Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching" as well as an "MA in Teaching and learning in Art, Design, and Communication for teaching in Higher Education."
