Course description

Course overview

Introduction to Drawing Skills will help you develop core skills that have a wide range of creative applications. At the beginning of the course we will work on simple exercises that provide new ways of looking at individual objects, still life and the model. To strengthen the abstract qualities in your work and help overcome literal-mindedness, time will be given to analysing form in space, studying light and shade and considering composition and pictorial design.

In the second half of the course, you will be introduced to simple techniques and experimental processes to enable you to develop a more personal or meaningful interpretation of your subject matter.

The course is for mixed ability students, and it is taught using sound educational methods and sensitive personal tutoring.

Key information

Topics covered

  • Week 1: Still life / objects – line and observational basics, tone, texture and pattern. Composition and the thumbnail.
  • Week 2: Figure – line. Observational basics - how to draw the figure. Drawing using line and wash.
  • Week 3: Perspective – how to draw space simply, then understanding perspective constructions.
  • Week 4: Portrait basics, movement and multi-figure composition.

Learning outcomes

  • By the end of the course, you will have a portfolio of drawings in several media, and a clear glimpse of what makes drawing such a uniquely satisfying activity.
  • Receive a digital badge and certificate of attendance

  • Willow charcoal medium
  • A3 drawing cartridge paper
  • Black fine tip felt marker
  • Black medium tip felt marker
  • Black chisel (wedge) tip felt marker
  • Rubber
  • White chalk or conte crayon
  • 2B pencil

Tutor

Mari Rose Pritchard

Mari Rose Pritchard is a multidisciplinary artist and art educator. She studied Printmaking at Brighton University and Chelsea School of Art, London, graduating with a First Class Fine Art BA Honours degree and MA respectively. Her hard working ethos, exploration of technique and skill are very much a part of her approach today. While in London, she worked extensively for the stage and for advertising, creating costumes and props for West End Theatres and T.V. Her recent exhibiting journal is full of a series of installations and artworks, bringing her experiences together through rich storytelling, multi visual media and sensual concepts. She is currently collaborating on a multi-faceted project delving into Limestone. She has over 25 years of teaching experience delivering varied courses in Art and Design; teaching a vast array of media to students honing their professional and personal artistic interests. Many of her students achieve and progress onto their desired courses and placements and many exhibit nationally and internationally.
