Course overview
Designed to ignite your imagination, this course challenges and develops your existing drawing and painting skills through a series of innovative and creative approaches.
You'll explore familiar subjects, such as still life and the nude model, using modern practical methods and fresh perspectives, reimagining classical themes and environments to create new, original artworks. A strong technical foundation will form the basis of our approach.
The work you produce will be ideal for inclusion in portfolios for A-Level or similar courses in Fine Art, Graphics, or Design, helping you take the next step in your future studies.
Who this course is for
- Students aged 16 to 18 from all backgrounds with a passion for contemporary painting, including beginners
- Students considering further study within the arts
- This course will complement other short courses for 16 to 18 year-olds, such as Life Painting for 16 to 18 Year Olds, Life Drawing for 16 to 18 Year Olds and Art and Design for 16 to 18 Year Olds.

Materials
- 1 large, primed canvas board or small canvases for your final work
- An A3 portfolio or tube to carry work home with you
- A notepad and pen or/and a sketchbook
- Source materials to create your work from (please consider this carefully; it's important to use imagery which is inspiring and meaningful to you. Anything you bring in can be photocopied, to ensure that the original is not damaged. You could include Sketches, Photographs, Magazine cuttings, Travel tickets, Letters, Books, Fabric, etc)
- Pencils and/or any wet or dry drawing materials
Please do not bring oil paints
If possible, please bring a camera or camera phone to record the process of making the work, and the outcomes.
Suggested but not required:
- A range of brushes of differing size and shapes
- A range of acrylic paints (including Titanium white, Cadmium red, Alizarin crimson, Ultramarine blue, Cadmium yellow, Lemon yellow, Raw umber, Burnt umber)
- Any of your favourite drawing/painting mediums (This can include Coloured crayons, Felt tip pens, Colouring Pencils, Pastels, Biros, Chalk pens, Ink Pens, Watercolour paints, Gouache, Palette Knives, etc)
