Statement on events in Ukraine

We deplore and condemn the war in Ukraine. Our thoughts are with all whose friends and family are affected by this human tragedy. We will do everything possible to help students and staff navigate the emotional and financial impact of the conflict.

UAL is a meeting point for students from every nation, studying peacefully together. Through this, we can increase mutual understanding, teach the virtues of an impartial media, and help safeguard and build our national and global cultures.

Supporting our community

We recognise that this conflict may impact our staff and students in different ways, and we are ready to support any way we can.

Students

Through the Dean of Students, we have directly contacted students from Ukraine and surrounding areas to offer coordinated support – this includes financial support through the student hardship fund, emergency support in the form of supermarket e-vouchers and counselling support.

If your ability to complete your work or assessment has been impacted by the conflict, you can apply for Extenuating Circumstances. We are not requiring students to evidence claims in relation to the war in Ukraine.

We know these events are distressing to so many in our community. Our staff and students come to study and work with us from across the world and many have felt the impact of war, and human rights violations. All students can access Counselling, Health Advice & Chaplaincy services and can visit our Wellbeing hub for further resources. We are here to support all.

Our Student Advice Service can also offer guidance on funding, immigration and visas.

Staff

Support is available for staff who have concerns or whose wellbeing has been affected.

We appreciate that as an applicant you may find it difficult to provide any supporting documents, creative portfolios or attend an interview.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which brings together 15 leading UK aid charities, has launched a Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

DEC charities are in Ukraine and neighbouring countries meeting the needs of refugees and displaced people.

UK government guidance

The UK government has announced a range of measures to support Ukrainian nationals. British nationals and people settled in the UK will be able to bring extended family members to the UK and sponsored humanitarian visa route will be established. Find out more about the UK government measures.
