UAL is thrilled to extend its congratulations to staff and alumni who have been recognised for their dedication and contribution to the arts in the New Year Honours List for 2023.
Artist, writer, broadcaster and UAL Chancellor, Grayson Perry, received a knighthood in the New Year Honours List for his exceptional contribution to the arts.
Grayson is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading contemporary visual artists and his work is held in museums worldwide. Throughout his career, he has explored contemporary society and universal human issues such as identity, sexuality, and gender.
Examples of Grayson’s many achievements include being awarded the Turner Prize in 2003 – the first time it was given to a ceramic artist. He was appointed a Trustee of the British Museum in 2015 and received a RIBA Honorary Fellowship in 2016. In 2021, Grayson became the British visual artist since Henry Moore in 1968 to win the prestigious Erasmus prize.
There are several other UAL names celebrated in the 2023 New Year Honours List, including artist, photographer, and Turner-prize nominee Ingrid Pollard who was awarded an MBE. Pollard graduated in 1985 in BA Film and Video at London College of Printing (now London College of Communication). Since the 1980’s, Pollard’s portraiture photography has challenged perceptions of ‘Englishness’ and explored themes of race, place and nation.
Vanessa Kingori was made an OBE (previously MBE) for services to the media industry. Kingori was a UAL governor and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by UAL in 2018. Kingori became the first female publisher in British Vogue’s 102 year-long history in 2017 and is instrumental to the creative vision and emphasis on diversity that the team have made their mantra.
Hammad Nasar, Curator, Author and Art Historian, was awarded an MBE for services to the arts. Nasar developed the ‘Curating Nation’ project for the Decolonising Arts Institute in 2021.
And finally, Anne Tallentire, Artist, Teacher and Professor Emerita of Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, who was awarded an MBE for services to the arts. Tallentire’s work uses sculptural materials to symbolise mapping and naming, social control and urban occupations.
Congratulations to all of those recognised in the New Year Honours List for 2023 and thank you for your continued dedication to our communities and creative industries.
