Opening its doors in May, University of the Arts London’s (UAL) newest building, Greencoat, on Wilson Road will open the University to the local community and accommodate UAL’s increasing numbers of staff, students and provisions.

The result of a renovation and repurposing of an existing building, Greencoat, marks a new chapter for Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts’ alumni and public engagement, providing the first dedicated space for the Incubation Programme, as well as accommodating UAL Creative Computing Institute’s (CCI) growing cohort of staff and students.

The Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon College of Arts Incubation Programme helps graduates from the 3 colleges set up and grow viable businesses within a creative and user-led environment, using business models and ideas focusing on circular economies, social justice, or responsible use of emerging technologies.

"The opening of Greencoat is very exciting and reflects the growing scope of the Incubation Programme. Over the next 5 years, we will be supporting even more graduates at different stages of business development, from launching a creative business to scaling one up."

Imogen Lawry, Graduate Futures Manager at Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts, UAL.

Later in the year, a new building – The Hub at Eagle Wharf - will provide further public access to digital skills for the Peckham community. Located on Bonar Road, The Hub at Eagle Wharf is designed to support members of the local community of all ages to develop skills in using technology. It will also run a regular programme of public events produced in partnership with local collaborators, and will give CCI’s Tech Yard, run by Jazmin Morris, a permanent, in-person home.

The buildings will meet the growing needs of the CCI, which has rapidly expanded in its courses, staff and student numbers since its conception in 2019. Greencoat facilities will include virtual reality pods, a ‘Dark Lab’ for projection and sound labs, as well as space for CCI diploma students to code together in one cohesive space.

Alongside provision for students and graduates, there will be desks for local businesses and individuals to hire, as well as maker spaces, training rooms and flexible spaces.

“These new spaces will be a fantastic addition to our ability to engage with local people and support more students on our latest programs. The CCI was launched with a strong social purpose to enable access to London’s high-value digital sector through creative digital skills at all levels.”
