Stephen Marshall is to retire in October 2021 as UAL University Secretary & Registrar, taking on a non-executive portfolio in education and mental health charities.

Stephen joined UAL as University Registrar in 2007, using a student-centred approach to transform and harmonise administration, admission and recruitment across UAL. This culminated in the design and recent launch of the Student First initiative. In 2009, he took on the additional role of University Secretary, ensuring effective decision-making under three Chairs of the Court of Governors, working closely with trustees and undertaking wide-ranging governance reviews. He is responsible for UAL’s health & safety and played a key role in the University’s planning during the pandemic.

Stephen's 35 years in higher education span five universities, including senior roles at Northampton and Oxford Brookes, where he was Academic Registrar. He made notable contributions to national agency groups and held trustee roles at schools and at another university.

Stephen Marshall said:

“I have loved the opportunity to serve UAL’s large, strange and wonderful community during an extraordinary period in which we came of age as a university. I have been proud to work alongside a talented team to provide the high standards of service which underpin education in every good university.”

James Purnell, President & Vice-Chancellor of UAL, said:

“With his famously understated approach and sense of playfulness, Steve has made an essential contribution to UAL’s corporate governance and our ability to operate in often tricky waters over the last 14 years. We will miss his wise and humane approach to sensitive staff and student matters, and his acuity in academic policy and regulatory issues.”
