UAL Print accessibility statement

UAL Print is the print service at the University of the Arts London (UAL) which allows staff and students to print, photocopy and scan documents. The service is provided through a website interface software called PaperCut MF and it is provided by the vending company called PaperCut Software International. Find out more about the accessibility of PaperCut.

This accessibility statement applies to the PaperCut MF user web interface, which is the interface accessed by students and staff though UAL Print. Other websites and browser based systems on the arts.ac.uk domain have their own accessibility statements.

We commit to ensuring this website is as accessible as possible and we want as many people as possible to be able to use it. The vendor has also committed to making their software accessible and this means you should be able to:

  • access the software regardless of the device and browser you are using
  • zoom in up to 200% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the software using just a keyboard
  • listen to most of the software using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know that some parts of the website are not fully accessible:

  • The calendar widget has keyboard traps, which means a user can get into this element using a keyboard but cannot get out of this component through the use of a keyboard
  • You cannot skip to the main content when using a keyboard
  • Page titles need to be more informative
  • Link tags and alt tags need better explanation for screen readers
  • Graphs and charts are not readable by screen readers

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some images may not have alternative (alt) text descriptions while other decorative and spacer images may not have null alternative text. This fails WCAG success criterion 1.1.1 Non-text Content (Level A).

Anchor tags and tables lack semantic markup. Tables currently lack use of scope attributes as well as some inputs lack visible labels. This fails the following WCAG success criteria:

  • 1.3.1 Info and Relationships (Level A)
  • 1.3.3 Sensory Characteristics (Level A
  • 1.3.4 Orientation (Level AA)

Colour contrast levels, text sizes, text spacing input focus, hovers focus and status messaging are not accessible. This fails the following WCAG success criteria:

  • 1.4.1 Use of Colour (Level A)
  • 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum) (Level AA)
  • 1.4.11 Non-text Contrast (Level AA)
  • 1.4.12 Text Spacing (Level AA)
  • 1.4.13 Content on Hover or Focus (Level AA)

While you can navigate most of the PaperCut MF User Web Interface with only a keyboard, there are some areas where you can’t, such as the calendar widget. This fails the following WCAG success criteria:

  • 2.1.1 Keyboard (Level A)
  • 2.1.2 No Keyboard Trap (Level A)

Link purpose tags for screen readers and 'skip to main content' links are missing from pages. Additionally, page titles are not descriptive. This fails the following WCAG success criteria:

  • 2.4.1 Bypass Blocks (Level A)
  • 2.4.2 Page Titled (Level A)
  • 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context) (Level A)
  • 2.4.6 Headings and Labels (Level AA)

Language attribute tags are missing. These tags help automated tools like screen readers and translation tools to more accurately identify the words on the screen. This fails the following WCAG success criteria:

  • 3.1.1 Language of Page (Level A)
  • 3.1.2 Language of Parts (Level AA)

Although the PaperCut MF provides consistent navigation, there is no 'skip to main content' for keyboard users. Input levels for keyboard navigation do not follow consistent paths, and active elements on the page are not sufficiently differentiated through contrast. This fails the following WCAG success criteria:

  • 3.2.2 On Input (Level A)
  • 3.2.3 Consistent Navigation (Level AA)
  • 3.2.4 Consistent Identification (Level AA)

Currently error suggestions are presented away from the input fields. Some descriptions and suggestions are not sufficiently intuitive. This fails the following WCAG success criteria:

  • 3.3.1 Error Identification (Level A)
  • 3.3.3 Error Suggestion (Level AA)

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Disproportionate burden

UAL has no control over the design, the user interface or the level of accessibility of PaperCut MF and we are unable to make any accessibility fixes ourselves. Therefore, we believe it would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations to fix the issues ourselves.

We are committed to ensuring as of our students and as many of our staff as possible are able to use UAL Print. More information about what we’re doing to improve the accessibility of this site is in the section below.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are in contact with the vendor about the accessibility of the PaperCut web interface and we continue to lobby them to make accessibility fixes as soon as possible. The vendor has committed to fixing the above issues in 2021. Find out more about the accessibility of PaperCut.
