We caught up with alumni and textile designer Anu Raina to talk about her time studying Womenswear at London College of Fashion (LCF) and find out what she’s been up to since then.
What did you study at UAL and what brought you to choose that course/college?
I studied Womenswear at LCF, graduating in 1997. I chose LCF for its reputation as a leading fashion school in Europe.
What was your experience like at UAL?
My experience at LCF was tough but very rewarding. I had a background in biology and had never touched a sewing machine before. Because of this I struggled a lot in the first semester and was almost on the verge of quitting the program. But I decided to give it my best shot and worked very hard. With the kindness and the support of the amazing tutors, I soon started improving in leaps and bounds. It was very encouraging and an incredible experience to see my growth. LCF laid the foundation of my design career. I’m truly grateful for everything I learned there.

Tell us about what you have been doing since graduation.
Since graduation, I’ve worked for a few years in the industry, got married, and moved to Canada, where I had 2 beautiful children and took a break to raise them. Then I went back to school at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, for a Diploma in Textile printing. Since graduating in 2010, I launched my eponymous label and today I have a successful business with two stores in Toronto and Oakville.
Tell us more about Anu Raina.
Anu Raina has a focus on original prints, and the brand embodies the true spirit of slow fashion. The prints are inspired by my travels and personal life journeys. All the pieces are hand cut and made in small batches in Toronto. Our aesthetic is timeless – a mixture of art, fashion and fine craftsmanship. Our audience is a modern, independent woman who believes in conscious living, and has a strong sense of style but does not necessarily follow trends.
Over the years we’ve built up a strong following of loyal customers who return time and again for more collector pieces.

Tell us about the greatest achievement for yourself/your business.
Personally, I've come a long way from losing my home to ethnic cleansing in Kashmir (India) to being a successful designer in Toronto, Canada. Professionally, my best is yet to come!
What advice would you give to someone who wants to set up their own business?
Never give up on your dreams!
