In June, we welcomed alumni and friends back to UAL for the Summer Shows at London College of Communication, Chelsea College of Arts, and Central Saint Martins. Guests celebrated with free drinks and snacks and took in the stunning work of the new graduating cohort.

We also welcomed back alumni from BA Graphic Design at London College of Printing (now London College of Communication), class of 1985. We would like to say a big thank you to alumni volunteer and DPS Course Coordinator, Sarah Temple, for organising it.

Make sure you are invited to future alumni events by updating your details with us.

Message from Sarah:

"Our 40-year reunion was a joyful, memorable gathering of the 1985 Graphic Design class at London College of Communication (LCC), coinciding with the Design School’s future move to a new site at Elephant & Castle in 2027.

15 of us attended, a strong turnout given the pre-digital era we graduated in and the difficulty of tracing classmates, some of whom are now living as far as Dubai, the USA, and Europe. Our careers had taken diverse paths: from running agencies to working with global design groups, illustrating, teaching, making ceramics, and directing.

Many great conversations were sparked, all returning to the same topic: how uniquely formative our time at LCC had been, especially under the influence of Tom Eckersley. His teaching left a lasting impact, and our shared love of design has endured.

Sarah Mahurter hosted us at the Kubrick Archive, where she displayed School yearbooks, Eckersley posters, and gig flyers from our era. It reminded us of his legacy as one of the first to establish undergraduate design courses in the UK, and of his iconic posters still studied today. Many of us, like him, have combined practice and teaching in our careers.

After visiting the Screen School’s Private View, we gathered nearby to celebrate in an older part of Elephant & Castle that brought back more memories of our arrival in 1982. In a quiet moment, we lit candles in memory of 6 classmates who we sadly learned had passed away and created a memorial to them. We are planning a second reunion closer to the Design School’s move to the new building in 2027, for those who were unable to attend.

Huge thanks to UAL Alumni Team for their support, and we’d love to hear from or about other members of the class of 1985".
