On a hot and humid Friday afternoon in July, members of the UAL Alumni of Colour Association gathered by the River Thames to enjoy a guided tour of the Queen’s House in Greenwich. The highlight of the tour was the ceramic artwork on display by Jaqueline Bishop, entitled "The Keeper of All Secrets".
The artwork centres around the role of the market woman in Caribbean communities: a healer, trader, preserver, and transmitter of cultural knowledge.
The tour was led by Errol Francis, a Central Saint Martin's graduate, and CEO and Artistic Director of Culture&, an independent arts and education charity that opens up the arts and heritage sectors through workforce initiatives and public programmes.
It was also led by Victoria Lane, Senior Curator of Art and Identity, responsible for Contemporary Art at @royalmuseumsgreenwich.
We want to say a massive thank you to Erol and Victoria for kindly lending us their time and expertise. And thank you to Annette Fernando, our lovely AoCA volunteer, for organising the tour.
If you would like to be a part of the AoCA, a collaborative community that aims to support and connect people of colour in the creative industries, get in touch at aoca@arts.ac.uk.
If you have any ideas for future tours and visits, please do let us know!
