Print and textile designer Elizabeth Morling has a successful career in the fashion industry; and she's recently turned her hand to the world of interior design, setting up her own interior textiles business. Made and designed in Britain, Maison Lisette’s fabrics are made in small runs, to minimize waste. Elizabeth recently shared her tips for setting up a new business.

Tell us about your time at UAL, what did you study and why did you choose that course?

I studied BA Fashion Print at Central Saint Martins and I loved it. I'd just moved to London from Paris and it was all exciting and new! I met some really interesting people and it was a great door into the industry.

I’d previously studied Womenswear Fashion but felt print and textiles was a better path for me.

What inspires you?

I’m a textiles and print designer, mostly for fashion but recently for interiors too. My inspiration comes from many sources, whether it be vintage, art, magazines, streetwear.

What's been your experience of starting your own brand?

It’s been hugely exciting and gratifying. I find myself thinking about it all the time. It’s been super challenging of course, but I’ve learnt so much and received a lot of positive feedback which is always encouraging.

What have been some of the challenges of setting up your business?

The main challenges have been pricing of product, and marketing!

How do you manage/organise your workload/daily schedule?

I freelance for other brands most of the time, and I’m also a mum to a young girl so I fit Maison Lisette in to my evenings or on days off!

As a small business, do you have any tips on how to promote your work effectively?

I’m finding Instagram the best communication tool. Making sure to interact with people and getting your brand known.

And lastly, what have been your career highlights?

My career highlights have been working with people I admire and creating products which are loved!
