Daniel Oduntan

May – July 2024

We welcome media artist and designer Daniel Oduntan to a 2-month residency that was chosen through an open call. This was started by the Public Engagement team to explore our connections with the local community. The residency will offer dedicated research and thinking time.

Daniel will be based at The Hub. This is a space for the community in Peckham that focuses on digital skills and technology. They will also work alongside UAL Incubator: Grow, a free 6-month start-up programme that supports creative businesses with a focus on physical or digital innovation.

Daniel has strong local connections due to growing up in the area. He hopes to have conversations with local artists, architects, and community members. This will help contribute to a richer understanding of the area's cultural heritage.

Daniel’s practice revolves around 2 main strands – questioning spatial reality and amplifying often unheard voices through storytelling. He has previously worked across sound, visual art, performance media, print, and installation. This has led him to focus on creating new audio-visual languages in public spaces and live archiving.

Rooted in participatory themes, his work looks to:

  • create experiences that challenge perceptions
  • foster empathy
  • address pressing social issues, whilst questioning the boundaries of traditional artistic expression.

The residency will be split into 3 phases of ideation, experimentation and reflection. Daniel will explore ideas around spatial regeneration, memory preservation and cultural identity.

During the residency, Daniel will make use of the Hub as a working and meeting environment. There will be moments that will be open to staff, students and the public.
