A tragic loss to all who knew her, the display provided an opportunity to celebrate her prolific talents that demonstrated her love of art and enthusiasm for making.
In her work, the allegories and symbolism of western art history were explored through a combination of drawing, painting and embroidery techniques. Hers was an inventive approach to art-making that yielded unique and captivating results.
Accompanying the show was an exhibition by staff and students, who took inspiration from art history to create new works, a fitting tribute to Fauzia Akbar's life and work.
Fauzia Akbar, Will Assheton, Maria Ball, Josep Barnadas, Kelly Chorpening, Sophia Ellis and Alice Overton, Evie Hatch, Patrick Metcalfe, Brigitte Mierau, Alexandra Mowinski, Christina Riant, Sweksha Goyal and Anne Lumumba, Gwenllian Spink, Jess Stiles, Kyriakos Tsirigotis, Valentia, Dionne Ward and Max K Weaver.
There were also examples of embroidery made by members of the Akbar family, including a 1938 piece by her grandmother, and her sister Arifa wrote a vivid and moving account of Fauzia's artistic life for the publication that complemented the exhibition.
