Biography

Honorary Fellow

Gregor Muir, Director of Collection, International Art at Tate, is one of the most influential figures in London’s art scene, and a graduate of Camberwell College of Arts. He is credited with enlivening the contemporary art scene in the 90s and beyond by platforming emerging artists and curating pioneering programmes of film and video art.

Upon achieving his degree in Fine Arts, Gregor became an avid follower and chronicler of the 1990s’ Young British Artists (YBA) movement. His first break in the art world came as a writer for the newly launched Frieze magazine followed by his founding of the Lux Gallery in Shoreditch in 1997, which featured shows by artists such as Gilbert & George and German conceptualist Carsten Höller.

At Tate, Muir is responsible for coordinating acquisitions for the Tate collection, across modern and contemporary art, as well as running several regional acquisition committees to acquire art from around the world. Gregor has also written extensively on contemporary art and artists, as well as having released a book documenting the 90s London art scene.
