Biography

A writer, editor, artist and educator with a transdisciplinary background encompassing fine art, biology and information science. Holme is author and co-author of book chapters and articles relating to art and science, the aesthetics and rhetoric of images, and pedagogy. He is currently particularly concerned with questions of human agency in the face of advancing science and technology, along with the associated political, cultural and ecological implications.

Holme began his career in science. Following his BSc in Biological Sciences he pursued a career in science publishing and pharmaceuticals, also gaining a PG Dip in Information Science. He returned to education as a mature student to take a BA in Creative Arts (visual art and performance), followed later by a Master’s in Fine Art (CSM). His exhibited work during these years included performance and installation. He began his teaching career in 2005, lecturing in illustration and fine art whilst also working as a commercial copywriter and editor servicing industry. Holme is now a Lecturer and Unit Leader on MA Art and Science at Central Saint Martins. He was formerly a senior lecturer on the BA Hons Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts where he taught for 16 years. In his teaching, Holme works to create productive relationships between 'theory' and practice, including ways in which critical methods stimulate and support creative work. He was one of the founders of the Journal of Illustration (Intellect) and is an associate editor on the journal, and a member of the Illustration Research International Steering Committee.

Artist’s statement
"All of my works, even my 'static' pieces, embody some element of time and movement. The aesthetic of the work is arrived at through the simplest of processes, reflecting, in a sense, the working of nature where simple laws lead to complex phenomena."
