Biography

Andrew Hall – Biography 2023:

I gained a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design (1986) from Saint Martins School of Art (now Central Saint Martins), followed by a PGCE in Art & Design (1994) from De Montfort University, Leicester, followed by a PG Cert in HE Art & Design (2012) and an MA in Academic Practice (2016) from UAL Central Saint Martins.

Between 1991 and 1996, I worked as a designer for a variety of theatre companies, and assistant to the designer for productions staged by The Royal Shakespeare Company and Kenneth Branagh’s Renaissance Theatre Company.

Since focussing on an academic career, I have had journal-related articles published on subjects such as coded robotic drawing, cutting-edge illustration practice in Tokyo and New York, the history of drawing practice at Central School of Art/Central Saint Martins, and the transition from analogue illustrative production methods to digital ones, and their ensuant combinations. In addition, I have authored the book ‘Illustration’ as part of Laurence King Publishing’s Higher Education portfolio series, as well as authoring chapters for the books ‘Picture This – Artist as Illustrator’ and ‘A Companion Guide to Illustration – Contemporary & Post-Contemporary Practice.’ My current research interests are in constructing socio-political histories of illustration practice from an inclusive, international perspective, and in identifying contemporary innovative and future-facing practice within the broad field of commercial and non-commercial Illustration. This has now culminated in a recent publishing commission by 'Thames & Hudson' to author a book titled 'Illustration: A Concise History' for their 'World of Art' series, to be published in Autumn 2024.

I was a visiting lecturer on BA Graphics from 1990 - 1993 and set up and ran both the CSM Graphic Design Portfolio Course (1994) and the CSM Graphics Summer School (1994). In 1998 I became Illustration Route Leader on the course (now titled 'Platform Leader for Narrative & Voice'). I also work as lead GCD tutor on Admissions, Study Abroad and Client-Led Briefs.
