Biography

I am a Graphic Designer with over 15 years experience of teaching in Higher Education.

My career as a graphic designer began at CDT Design in 1995 working on projects for Benenden School, Design Council, Earth Centre, Our Price, Royal National Theatre, South Bank Centre and Volkswagen UK. At Lloyd Northover I worked on projects for BNFL, The Millennium Commission, UBS and SITA. As a founding partner of Unleaded Design I worked for art galleries, local councils and publishers and the Royal Society of Arts. I work independently on graphic design projects alongside my teaching. As a graphic designer I am concerned with the visual organisation and presentation of information using a systematic methodology informed by the teachings of Armin Hofmann, Emil Ruder and Wolfgang Weingart (Basel), Geoff White (Ravensbourne) and I subscribe to the values of Radical Modernism (Dan Friedman, 1994).

I am currently studying for a PhD in graphic design and typography (UAL: Central Saint Martins) and I hold an MA with Distinction in Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication (UAL, 2025) an MA with Distinction in Design Writing Criticism (UAL: London College of Communication, 2010) and a First Class BA (Hons) in Visual Communication Design (Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, 1995).

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE, 2020) and hold a PGCE with Distinction (University of Essex, 2013). I was External Examiner for MA Graphic Design at the Open College of the Arts (2024-2025) and for theory units on BA (Hons) Graphic Design at University for the Creative Arts (2019–2024) and the University of Westminster (2015–2019).
