Ben Whyman

Biography

Ben Whyman is manager of the Research Centre for Fashion Curation based at the University of the Arts London, where he project manages and researches for exhibitions, publications and events on museology and fashion curation.

He has presented his research at conferences, and is published, including book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as being a peer reviewer for journals and publishing houses.

Ben completed a PhD (UAL, 2019) exploring personal menswear collections housed in the V&A Museum and the Fashion Museum, Bath. He evaluated if and how a collection of artefacts of dress (including prosaic items such as shirts, belts, shoes) can augment an understanding of character and amplify the life stories of the men who wore them. The thesis explored the biography of objects, material culture analysis as a life-writing method, the power of memory/the act of remembering, and masculinities.
