Biography
Dominica is an award winning, interdisciplinary filmmaker and an educator based in the UK. She specialises in animation direction and illustration, with a particular focus on hand-crafted techniques, often combining traditional image-making approaches like printmaking with 2D animation. Dominica is interested in storytelling as a mechanism of learning and social change.Her last film ‘Chado’ (2021) supported by BFI NETWORK and produced by Animate Projects, premiered at Hiroshima International Animation Festival and screened at 45 festivals including Leeds IFF, London IAF and Anima Brussels. It was longlisted for the BAFTA British Short Animation Award 2021, nominated for the British Animation Awards Audience Award 2022, and received a Vimeo Staff Pick. Dominica’s screen printed, short film 'Illusions' (2016) had worldwide success at festivals and art exhibitions, winning NEO:Print Prize Award in 2017, Locomotion Animation Festival - Emergent Trigger Award; Feel The Reel Film Festival - Best Animation 6. It was shortlisted for the RTS Scotland Student Award and received a Vimeo Staff Pick. Her film ‘Para Todo Mal’ (2022), made in collaboration with Collectivo Subterraneous in Mexico, screened at Brighton International Animation Festival and KixtaFest, Mexico. ‘The Old Snake Fell Asleep On The Grass’ (2017), made with Preschool Poets, won the MAST's Voices Seen animation contest.
Dominica has been working as an animator on the multi award winning ‘Ninety-Five Senses’ (2024) and 'A Bear Named Wojtek' (2024), both, a nominee for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. Previously, she animated on Academy Award and BAFTA Feature Animation nominee ‘Loving Vincent’ (2017).
Recently, Dominica curated and printed a collaborative short animated film and graphic novel 'In The Garden: Giggles In The Greenery' (2024) with 11 international artists that has toured Europe with 5 book launch events and exhibition in London, Manchester, Angouleme, Porto, Berlin and Moscow.
