Esther McManus

Biography

I am the Practices Tutor for Print Production on the BA (Hons) Graphic Communication Design Programme, a role that examines both the practice and theory of publication. Informed by my background in printmaking, my teaching bridges the classroom, workshop, library and archive, and foregrounds print’s historical role in the production and distribution of knowledge.

Outside of the classroom, I makes comics that explore personal & collective relationships to history. My current practice-based research explores visual/narrative representations of scholarly (and particularly archival) research, to demystify the processes for audiences beyond the academy.

I collaborate with archives and academic institutions on new publications and research, including Gaada, MayDay Rooms and the Institute of Historical Research. I was awarded the Arts Foundation Futures Award for Comics in 2020, and the Sambrook Bursary for the London International Palaeography Summer School in 2021.
