Biography

I am an artist, writer, and researcher. My work looks at how large-scale technologies, complex systems, and heavy industry are perceived, imagined, and experienced; with a side-line in deviance and sexualities. I use performance, sculpture, multi-media installations, sprawling research projects, and writing to explore these areas.

Before moving into art and design, I originally trained in industrial economics and science and technology policy. Although my work is very different now in terms of how I do it, it continues to be driven by questions around the cultural and political forces which shape industries and technologies; how storytelling and imaginaries are put to political ends; and what is seen as ‘normal’.

My installation and performance work has been shown at TAC Eindhoven, Rainbow’s End Festival (Utrecht), Tate Modern, The Design Museum, Auto Italia South East, Akademie Schloss Soltitude, STUK (Leuven), HeK Basel, London Design Festival, Vienna Biennale, Brighton Digital Festival, V&A Museum, Milton Keynes International Festival, and Future Flux Festival (Rotterdam). I have held residences with Autodesk’s Pier 9; RAMLAB, Port of Rotterdam; Somerset House Studios; and Lighthouse Arts Brighton.

My writing has been published by The Atlantic, The Guardian, and Harvard Design Magazine, amongst others; and in journals including Modes of Criticism, Sexualities, Science as Culture, Journal of Homosexuality, and Journal of Economic Geography.

I am currently Director of Supra Systems Studio, hosted by the Design School, London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. At UAL, I am a Reader (Associate Professor) in Systems and Deviance, and teach on MA Interaction Design. Prior to this, I was Co-Founder and Director of the design and research studio, Strange Telemetry; and, before that, led projects for the multidisciplinary studio Tinker London. I hold an MBiochem in Biochemistry with History and Philosophy of Science from Oxford University; and an MSc in Science and Technology Policy and PhD in Science and Technology Studies from the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex. I have held previous and visiting positions with institutes including Tinker London, MIT, Royal College of Art, Goldsmiths, University of Southern California, UCL, The New School, and NYU.
