Biography
Jake Hawkes is a PhD Student at Central Saint Martins, focussing on the nostalgic Americanisation of music subcultures in the 1970s and 1980s, with specific focus on the rockabilly and psychobilly subcultures.He has reviewed Kimberley Kattari's 'Psychobilly: Subcultural Survival' and Paul Wainwright's 'The Resurrection of The Crazed' for the journal Punk & Post-Punk, and presented his research at the KISMIF 2024 conference in Porto, as well as UAL's RNUAL symposium.
He is also contributing editor of music magazine Dork, and a music, gaming, and culture journalist writing for NME, Rolling Stone UK, The London Standard and others. He has previously worked with the Museum of Youth Culture, writing overviews of grime, emo and nu-metal, and has also worked in the press office of both the Natural History Museum and the Museum of London.
He co-presents Dork's fortnightly flagship podcast 'Down With Boring', which he has hosted live on stage at festivals across the UK.
