            Biography
Dr. Kayalvizhi Jayavel is a researcher, academic leader, and educator with over two decades of experience in data science, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Currently serving as Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for the BSc (Hons) Data Science and AI at the Creative Computing Institute, University of the Arts London, she has been instrumental in shaping a forward-looking curriculum that integrates cutting-edge research with practical learning. In this role, she leads teaching teams, mentors students, drives curriculum innovation, and connects academia with industry expertise.Her career reflects a strong balance of academic leadership, research excellence, and international collaboration. Prior to joining UAL, she served as Associate Professor and Assistant Director for International Relations at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, India, where she spearheaded cross-border partnerships with leading universities such as the University of Hull (UK), La Trobe University (Australia), ECAM La Salle (France), and the National University of Singapore. In recognition of her contributions to education and research, Dr. Jayavel was appointed Honorary Associate Professor at the College of Science and Technology, University of Rwanda. She has also taught extensively in IT, Computer Science and Electronics and Communication, and mentoring countless students including PhD supervisions with in CCI and internationally and fostering industry ties that opened new opportunities for placements and internships.
Dr. Jayavel earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science with distinction in 2019, focusing on IoT testbed frameworks, following her Master’s in Embedded Systems from Anna University and Bachelor’s in Electronics and Communication Engineering. In 2025, she completed her Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice in Art, Design, and Communication at UAL, reflecting her commitment to innovative pedagogy. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), UK.
Her research portfolio spans AI-driven healthcare, IoT-enabled precision agriculture, automated traffic data management, digital equity in education, and stress management in higher education students. She has been international expert advisor , senior researchers and led numerous national and international projects with significant funding. Few of them to mention, £95,000 worth project on IoT-enabled farming in Rwanda, a £50,000 worth project on automated road crash data systems, and £34,000 worth project on tech-driven healthcare during COVID-19. She has also collaborated as a consultant with industry partners in the UK and Sweden, applying AI and IoT solutions to real-world challenges.
Alongside research, she has published in high-impact journals, contributed book chapters, served as Associate Editor for Frontiers of Internet of Things, and reviewed for top journals such as Sensors and Frontiers in Digital Health. Her contributions extend to conference committees, Springer book series, and advisory roles for academic promotions. She has also been invited as keynote speaker, panelist, and workshop resource person at international events in the UK, India, Rwanda, Oman, and beyond.
Recognition for her teaching and service is equally notable. At UAL, she was shortlisted for the prestigious Arts Awards in 2024—“Outstanding Teaching and Student Voice Champion”—selected from over 600 applications. Earlier in her career, she received the ACM Service Recognition Award for promoting women in IoT, and served as a mentor for winning teams in national innovation hackathons. She has also been recognized as a Distinguished Member of the EAI Community and nominated for multiple teaching and mentorship awards.
Her outreach work reflects a passion for inclusion and empowerment. She has led AI workshops for underprivileged school children, promoted women in technology through ACM and JDuchess initiatives, and delivered social purpose talks such as “IoT for Future Female Scientists” at Enfield Girls School in London.
Dr. Jayavel holds one granted patent in IoT-based food adulteration detection and another published patent on IoT testbeds. She maintains active memberships in ACM, ISCA, and professional engineering societies, and continues to mentor students through ACM student chapters and innovation clubs.
With a career spanning teaching, research, consulting, and international collaboration, she have been fortunate to work at the intersection of applied AI and IoT and as a recognised leader in her field of expertise. Her focus is on using technology to address real-world challenges while supporting and inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators through inclusive, practice-based education.
