Biography
I am a designer, researcher and educator interested in design’s unique disciplinary approach, engaging with wicked problems, and negotiating complexity through participatory design and the values this can uncover. I am particularly interested in the design and consequences of systems, physical/digital products, and technology on daily practices. I am currently Senior Lecturer and Year 2 Lead on the BA Product and Furniture Design BA at Chelsea, and from 2023-24 I was seconded as Creative Producer and Senior Lecturer to the MA Global Collaborative Design Practice at Camberwell College of Arts. In these roles I support student lead improvements to course content, structure, and student experience, as well as developing strategic partnerships with educational, commercial and charitable institutions. Prior to my role at CCW, I was Senior Lecturer and Industrial Design BA Course Leader at Brunel University London’s Design School, where I taught / supervised Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, led core Design Process modules and managed course developments and revalidation.I have commercial experience in product, furniture and installation design and delivery, specialising in digital/physical, innovative use of materials and electronic interaction, form development and strong knowledge of manufacturing techniques. I spent around a decade working as a freelancer for creative practices including Moritz Waldemeyer, Troika, rAndom International, Studio XO and Conrad Shawcross Studios. I am also the founder of Mike Kann Design, a furniture studio that focuses on bespoke commissions for private clients and work that explores my practice interests.
