Biography

Sarah is a a multi disciplinary artist and fashion educator. Her teaching practice takes a critical, ecological, activist and values based approach and she has been lecturing at The London College of Fashion, UAL, within the School of Media and Communication since 2015.

Her research intersects fashion ecologies, defashion, movement based teaching and more recently critical walking pedagogies. Employing an ecological framework , she specialises in utilising fashion as a drive for social change and purpose. She has extensive experience of teaching styling as a technique to create stories that consider climate, racial and social justice, alongside sustainable production methodologies and research-creation.

She co creates fashion and textile workshops with school children and refugees that have storytelling at their core and bring people together through participatory fashion design activism. She has developed an outreach course at FE level that explores fashion cultures and the language of clothing to express identity, community and challenge injustice.

She was the Director of Sarah May Studio for over 10 years creating installations, sets, props and art direction for editorials, advertising and live events. Represented in New York and London by agencies Magnet and Industry Art.

She is part of a 3 person female arts collective investigating the need for an eco somatic language and new words for speaking about anthropogenic harm doing.

She is an active member of Fashion Act Now, an activist group demanding a radical de fashion future.
