Biography

Shujing Huang (b.1997) is an artist and practice-based PhD candidate at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Her doctoral research activates contemporary 'Nüshu' (a historical women's-only script) through an embodied artistic practice to re-interpret East Asian feminist narratives and the aesthetics of 'bushi' (discomfort or unease) in visual art.

Her artistic practice, which forms the core of her research, encompasses sculpture, video installation, painting, and performance, through which she seeks to awaken spatial empathy and provoke public introspection. Often marked by intensity and at times violence, her works critically engage with established norms and question traditional notions of bodily autonomy. Signature elements of her practice—such as “moving bodies” and “fragile sculptures”—investigate the transient stability of form and visually redefine the blurred boundaries between fear and danger.

Huang's research has been disseminated through international exhibitions, including a solo exhibition in Vienna (2024), and presentations across the UK, China, Germany, and the United States.
