About us

For as long as humanity has existed, stories have helped us make sense of our place in the universe. They challenge assumptions, shift mindsets, and ignite movements. Yet, in a world grappling with urgent crises, from climate change and rising inequality to polarisation and the spread of misinformation, our stories must work harder than ever to drive meaningful change.

That’s where we come in.

Launched in 2023, the AKO Storytelling Institute was founded on the belief that storytelling, when harnessed strategically, can be a powerful catalyst for social transformation. We bring together artists, campaigners, educators, and policymakers to explore how stories can have greater impact.

By collaborating with socially engaged creatives-including screenwriters, theatre directors, game designers, and immersive artists, we tackle critical issues such as climate justice, decolonising museums, and countering misinformation.

Our mission goes beyond telling stories: we seek to shape the future of storytelling itself. Through roundtables, events and published research, we explore the evolving landscape of impact storytelling, fostering dialogue and innovation. And we train our storytellers of the future to use their work as a force for good.

Because in times of crisis, stories aren’t just reflections of the world - they are blueprints for the future we want to build.

This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak we write, we do language. That is how civilisations heal.
