Post-Grad Ambassadors Lucy Jane MacAllister Dukes, Cece Westphalen, Michael Clark and Yehong Wei join the more than human group for a bucolic walk in the bluebell woods.

There aren’t a lot of words for this day, it was just magical.

The whole day felt like a gentle surprise. As an international student, it was my first time seeing a place blanketed in bluebells. Our midweek walk away from London was the perfect way to slow down, to breathe deeply, and to let nature whisper its quiet magic.

The closer we got, the more it felt like stepping into a fairytale. With every step, more blue petals revealed themselves, as if guiding us deeper into a hidden world. Lucy shared a bit about them—how bluebells are protected, how they bloom only in certain places, and only for a brief, special time.

There truly are no words to fully capture the experience. Still, I’d urge anyone to make time for this little escape. It’s a beautiful walk that leaves you both grounded and uplifted, wrapped in the quiet mysticism of these delicate flowers.

(Mike):  It wasn’t my first time to the bluebell glade in Hamstreet woods, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. It is found off the beaten path, in a quiet corner, side by side with fields used for growing turf, some of which had recently been carved up and shipped off to various gardens in perfectly rectangular strips. When you turn away from this slightly odd manifestation of humans’ manipulation and neat packaging of nature, the sight you are greeted with is breathtaking, untamed beauty.

Bluebells as far as one can see that trick the eye into thinking they it is seeing a bluish haze, like a gentle cloud floating above the ground where all the bluebells cease to be individuals and merge into one entity. Slender, dreamlike paths that flow past fallen trees nestled in the throng, overtaken by mosses, fungi and lichen (which also provide ample opportunity for sitting and feeling for all the world like a dryad just chilling).

Lucy furnished all the adventurers with a loupe, which I’m now convinced is an essential piece of kit for any activity. We were able to examine the tiny world and its working far closer than our own lenses would allow, and discovered even more surprising and wondrous details at increased magnification. We met a little bug that seemed to be spending its day living inside a bluebell – life goals if I’ve ever seen them.

The pictures are lovely, but certainly don’t do it justice. It was a lovely day with some fantastic people, and I can’t recommend it enough!

The forest was beautiful and gave me a deep sense of relaxation. It felt as if I were in a dream. Every night, I fall asleep to the sounds of nature, but it’s hard to find a forest without noise pollution in London. That trip created wonderful memories, and it became connected with bluebells. Now, whenever I see bluebells, I’m reminded of that journey.

Seas of sweet-smelling bluebells and swathes of wild garlic flow into each other. Thank you post-grad community for making this possible!
