Timna Krenn, Post-Grad Community Ambassador, recently took a group of students to Tate Britain to explore and gain inspiration for a collaging workshop at Chelsea.
On that enchanting last Thursday of July, we gathered in front of the resplendent Tate Britain building, expecting rain to dampen our spirits, but fortune favored us, and the skies remained clear as we embarked on a journey of camaraderie at the Post-Graduate Community event. To break the ice, we posed an intriguing question: "What did you have for breakfast?" Little did we know that this seemingly simple inquiry would lead to a delightful chorus of laughter and reveal the diverse and quirky breakfast choices that serve as unique icebreakers.
Our gathering was a cultural mosaic, with students hailing from four different UAL campuses and representing five distinct nationalities. As we explored the halls of Tate Britain's permanent exhibition, we discovered the profound impact of art in forging connections among strangers.
The museum's collection enthralled us with its vast array of Britain's finest art, spanning centuries and evoking emotions that nearly overwhelmed a pair of students who were momentarily lost in its captivating beauty. But fear not, for no soul was left behind, and we ventured onwards, eager to unveil our interpretations of the inspiring artworks that had marked us.
We bravely crossed the street to Chelsea College of Arts, ready to unleash our inner artists and art critics. Armed with pens, pencils, and oodles of creative energy, we dove headfirst into automatic writing, collaging, and deep discussions that made our heads spin with inspiration.
Amidst the vibrant artistic symphony, we couldn't ignore the rumbling of empty stomachs. The breakfast question had merely whet our appetite for culinary exploration, and it was time to satiate our cravings. The artwork had not only inspired our hearts but also emptied our tummies. Thankfully, the gates of Chelsea’s canteen welcomed us like a Michelin-starred restaurant, refuelling our creative stom....souls.
With newfound vigor, we resumed our creative flow, exchanging ideas and knowledge with accomplished alumni, emerging designers with ambitious projects, and current students from diverse backgrounds. The meeting of minds enriched us, reaffirming the timeless lesson that collaboration and nourishment, both artistic and gastronomic, are the lifeblood of innovation and growth.
As the event drew to a close, we departed from this remarkable experience with hearts alight, full tummies and mindful of the importance of forging connections, embracing diversity, and savoring the joy of creative exploration. Our day at Tate Britain, a fusion of art, food, and creative spirits, left an indelible mark on each of us—a vivid reminder that the power of artistic expression and shared meals can bind us together, transcending boundaries and weaving the threads of inspiration into the fabric of university life itself.
Tune in and listen to the sound collage, an acoustic mix with excerpts from the event!
