Preparing For Publication, Peer Review Group is a collaboration between UAL's Doctoral School and Post-Grad Community and is being established to provide a platform for staff, postgraduate students, and alumni to share and discuss texts and other material intended for publication.
By circulating drafts among members, the group aims to facilitate constructive feedback prior to submission, and to encourage the exchange of ideas, enable interdisciplinary collaboration, and support networks across diverse disciplines and departments at UAL.
The group will provide an opportunity for its members to connect with other researchers at UAL and benefit from support throughout the process of making their research public. This might include preparing materials to meet specific standards, understanding ways to communicate ideas effectively, and sharing knowledge of open calls and opportunities available to present research.
Membership of the group also offers the opportunity to develop peer review skills, to learn how to provide supportive feedback and to connect with other researchers and their projects. This group is open to all UAL postgraduate students, alumni and staff.
Accepted texts: Research papers, articles, reviews, chapters, visual, audio and film essays, conference presentations, and other material intended for publication. Student dissertations and curriculum essays are excluded from review.
Duration: 1 hour
Location: Online or in-person.
Group size: One paper per session with a maximum of five reviewers. If we receive more interest, we will try to allocate reviewers to other discussions.
Feedback delivery: Oral discussion during sessions and written comments are optional.
Structure and process:
- Members are invited to express interest in sharing their papers throughout the year.
- An email containing the session details and brief synopsis of the text for review will be sent out and interested members will be invited to confirm their attendance as reviewers. (Only those committed to review the text will be able to attend the session.)
- Papers will be shared with confirmed participants at least two weeks ahead of the scheduled group session, or earlier depending on the length of the text.
The feedback discussion will take place during the group sessions. All feedback is shared openly, rather than one-to-one. Written feedback is optional.
Online sessions: 12-1pm
In-person sessions: 5.30-6.30pm, location: tbc

Post-Grad Interest Groups at UAL
UAL’s Post-Grad Community Programme supports a growing number of issue-specific, cross-disciplinary interest groups led by postgraduate students and academics.
These groups connect creatives with shared research/practice interests across different specialisms and subject areas.
Students have launched interest groups in the past to coincide with exhibitions and symposiums that they have organised under the same theme, or have used Interest Groups as a working group towards research or a standalone event or series.
Interest Groups are a great way to build new networks at UAL for MA and PhD students with shared interests, a useful tool for finding cross-disciplinary students to work with on planned projects/activities, creating new audiences and ways to formally promote your practice.
