ABOUT XARKIS
Xarkis: from Ancient Greek ex’ arhis, which means from the beginning.
Xarkis is a project which was initiated during MA Communication Design at CSM (2012-2014). The distinction project focused on the development of the Xarkis festival; an event that aims to build a communal identity, community cohesion and cultural resilience through creative practice in a context of design led social innovation. Today, Xarkis Festival is one of the most anticipated Festivals happening in Cyprus and we are working towards its 6th edition.
Xarkis Festival will be hosted in the idyllic village of Koilani (Limassol district) Cyprus, during the 18-19th August 2018. Our team is planning a unique interdisciplinary, intergenerational and cross-cultural experience with art, design and craft workshops, a concert, an open air cinema, audio walks, performances, spatial installations and an experimental fiesta, which is inspired by the Greek Cypriot ‘glenti’ or ‘ziafettin’ and will form the climax of our Festivities.

The upcoming Xarkis Festival will be realised with collaborators who will be selected mainly on the basis of their contributions in socially engaged initiatives, which nurture creativity, experimental and innovative practices surrounding local culture and heritage.
As a follow-up to the artists’ residency program we had initiated in 2017, which featured artists’ participation from Canada, Spain, Greece and Cyprus, we are planning to develop the program to include creative practitioners from a wider range of fields, including practitioners from performance art, design, craft, music and fine art backgrounds from different parts of the globe.
The participants will be invited to work with the team of Xarkis, the local community and with workshop educators and facilitators who will be leading workshops and seminars during the week of 11-17 August. The results from their residencies will be presented during the Festival weekend.
