Podcast Host Yulin Huang, UAL Post-Grad Community Ambassador, studying MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins

For this first episode of our Post-Grad Community PG Tips Podcast Series, Yulin met online with fellow MA Fine Art student Marine One in the Archway studios of Central Saint Martins.

Curious about what other MA courses are doing?

Finding it difficult to connect with fellow post-grads across the UAL community?

The PG Tips Podcast is an open and safe space for people to come on and have a chat about their current work and research interests (and possibly offer some Tips/ advice for the rest of us), forming a fun audio space to listen to.

This has been a difficult year for us, but don’t forget that we do have a huge community here at the university. You are not alone - I hope this space will help alleviate some anxieties that come from a still developing practice and possibly spark some inspiration in hearing about other peoples’ research as well.

This series is also for those who are studying with us overseas who might not be able to be on campus right now and are finding it difficult to make new connections.

Feel free to message Yulin (@prettybloodart) or any of our future guests (I’m sure they will be open to making new friends and collaborations) - this is a friendly space to bring us closer together as a community!

Marine One, MA Fine Art, Central Saint Martins

For our very first episode I’m very excited to introduce a fellow course mate of mine - Marine One, whose work caught my eye in our Archway studios on the course.

Marine and I sat down and had a wonderful talk about the series of works she has been working on recently which is not only visually enticing, but thought provoking.

I see the heads from Gaze (2021) in the studio everyday - there is an immediate, strange uncanniness that seeps out of these stretched human faces that never fades. Intrigued, I asked more about this and got to know Marine a little better - from how she had only started ‘doing art’ in her BA year in Milan, to how her provocative subjects speak to the deeply ingrained presence of the male gaze.  Check out some of her works below.

Hung in the corner of the ceiling, the group of balloons are covered by digitally printed fabrics that each showcase the face of a white middle-aged man.

All of the faces are taken from the website thispersondoesntexist.com, which provides faces that are created from AI.

Somehow, the artificial faces look familiar, like someone you might know.

The interactive page holds an image of a 3D model. The spectator is able to touch any of the faces, playing a short snippet of questions delivered through an artificial voice. The open-ended questions include, “Are you alright?”, “How did you get here?”, and “Why are you laughing?”.

Video above: 'Pose', video, 3 minutes, 2021

Inspired by the poses of pin-up girls found on Japanese magazine covers, the three-minute video plays with the typical and seductive ‘feminine pose’ with male figures. The dialogue, taken from controversial remarks that Japanese politicians have made, are spoken through Siri’s default female voice. “Old women who live after they have lost their reproductive function are useless and are committing a sin,” is one such remark.

For anyone who is interested in this area of research and has no idea where to start, Marine recommends Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble.

Thank you for reading and listening to our first episode of PG Tips - make sure to tune in for future episodes!

If you are interested in being a guest on the podcast, please message Yulin @prettybloodart on instagram or email PGCommunity@arts.ac.uk. Hope to see you there!
