To celebrate Post-Grad Community’s 10-year anniversary, we are bringing students together to create the Family Heirloom - a collaborative tapestry combining the diverse artistic practices and perspectives of UAL's postgraduate community.

The theme for the Heirloom is to design a patch of fabric based on a reflection of yourself during your time at UAL. So far we’ve seen various materials being used on the fabric patches provided by Post-Grad Community, including fabric pens, pastels, embroidery thread, and beads.

Each postgraduate student or alumni can submit a 40cmX40cm patchwork of art that reflects themselves and will be stitched together in May 2024 at an open event hosted by London College of Fashion’s Lucy Orta.

Our textile-based drop-in crafting afternoons (inaugurated at Central Saint Martins last term) continued with a pop-up session at Camberwell College of Arts on Tuesday 23rd January, 2024.

In partnership with UAL Libraries, and welcomed warmly by Camberwell Library’s Learning Zone, we had a cosy afternoon sheltering from the rain and working on patches for the Family Heirloom.

With books from the library scattered for inspiration, embroidery was everyone’s primary choice of technique. Everything from floral patterns to Chinese writing could be seen on designs across the room.

If you’d like to respond to our open call and design a patch for the Family Heirloom you just need to register via Microsoft Forms (or contact Catriona Mahmoud if you’re an alumni or do not have a Microsoft account).

Students can also collect fabric kits from any UAL library.
