Post-Grad Mixer: Hex, at the National Theatre

To acknowledge and celebrate the end of another busy term, Post-Grad Community returned to the National Theatre to witness Hex, a grief-ridden musical loosely based on the ageless classic, Sleeping Beauty.

And if that doesn’t scream festive cheer, then I don’t know what will.

Fear not - there was plenty of cheer to go around in the build-up to the show. We welcomed the evening’s postgraduate theatregoers at Art SU’s Blueprint Bar at High Holborn. Standing shoulder to shoulder with an array of end-of-term-dos, t’was the season to be jolly, and so mince pies were laid out in abundance.

Postgraduate students from across UAL came together with recent alumni and staff members to puff the cheeks, sigh with relief, vent, and celebrate after the Autumn Term drew to a close. As ever, these moments of reflection offer special opportunities for the postgraduate community to become more familiar with one another. We are not ones to pass up such an occasion and nor were those in attendance.

Supporting the celebrations were the wonderful team from Accommodations. Across the festive period, they are offering a unique programme of activity – most notably, a day of merriment on Christmas Day that includes breakfast, lunch, presents, taxi pick-ups/drop offs, and most importantly, students and creatives from across UAL.

As hours passed by at the bar, it was time for the short hop across Waterloo Bridge to the National Theatre. Hex did not disappoint – far from it. This grisly tail of a fairy whose spell-come-curse to help the princess sleep, takes the audience through a medley of thoroughly enjoyable songs, delivered by a highly versatile cast.

While my useless opinion suggests it’s not one for the ‘instant classics’ list, it is well worth a watch over the winter break. The run continues until Saturday 14 January 2023, so plenty of time to get yourself down there and if you are willing to do some shopping, bargain tickets can be found from as little as £4.

From all the Post-Grad Community team, we hope your winter break is full of rest, recouperation, and celebration – it’s well deserved. We look forward to seeing you in 2023 and welcoming in January’s cohort. There’ll be plenty going on the new year so keep an eye out, and for those who’s time as a student has finished, don’t forget to sign up to the weekly Newsletter with your personal email address if you’d like to continue getting updates on events and opportunities from around UAL and beyond.
