As part of the 2022 Big Welcome, Post-Grad Community and Arts SU collaborated to stage an exclusively postgraduate mixer. Tucked away on the ground floor of London College of Communications, the recently refurbished Darkroom Bar hosted the festivities with over 300 new and returning postgraduates attending throughout the night. Cheese was scoffed and washed down with wine, while friendships blossomed as the latest members of UAL’s postgraduate community were brought together under one roof.

To mark the occasion, a call out was sent to returning students, requesting images of course-related work that encapsulated the creative talent and disciplinary range across postgraduate taught and research courses. The 12 selected works represented just a snapshot of the artistic endeavours currently being undertaken, but also highlighted the vital contribution that our postgraduate students make, both to UAL and the wider creative sector. The works were accompanied by the artist’s name and their course, omitting the respective College of study to emphasise their welcomed belonging and membership to the community of UAL.

We would like to say a massive thank you to those who made this celebration possible (and in no particular order). Sophia Nasif-Whitestone has been banging the postgraduate drum since joining Arts SU as LCC’s Sabbatical Officer, and this was a direct result of her hard work and voice on behalf of postgraduates across UAL. Minna Ellis’ (CSM Sabbatical Officer) and Orion Hall Turner’s (Arts SU Communications and Marketing Coordinator) curatorial eyes pieced together the postgraduate exhibition and were vital to making the occasion a memorable one. The super star team on the bar that night were Ellen, Mira, and Susie, led by the marvellous Joseph Burrows. If you haven’t been to see them yet, go and say hello soon. Finally, a massive thank you to those that made it down. This is your community for your time at UAL and beyond, so it only seemed right to meet each other and start with a bang! We’ll see you at the next one.
