LCC Industry Mentoring Scheme 2017/18 has started this month
with the Meet your Mentor event

Aiming to encourage and support postgraduate students’ transition from education to industry, the LCC Industry Mentoring Scheme places postgraduate students of all disciplines with industry professionals to support students’ development as they enter the creative industries.
In its fourth year, the mentoring scheme has increased its pool of mentors to over 45, including both alumni and industry professionals from sectors across all disciplines studied at LCC. This year’s Scheme includes companies such as Getty Images, BBC, FutureGov, V&A, BBH and Bloomberg Media.

Mentees met their mentors for the first time at an informal networking ‘Meet your Mentor’ event for the first opportunity to talk about the next steps in their mentoring relationship.
Throughout the journey of the LCC Industry Mentoring Scheme both mentees and mentors are given training to encourage making the most of the scheme and to enhance their time together.

“The industry mentoring scheme is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn from someone outside of the University environment. There is an additional set of knowledge and skills that the mentors have, live and breath that is immensely useful for a student to be able to hear and discuss at this stage in their career. Additionally the one-to-one relationship allows them to create a more meaningful connection with each other. I’m certain that the students will get a greater sense of purpose and direction from taking part.”

“Students with mentors build stronger connections between practice in the studio and practice in the field, they’re able to test and flesh-out ideas for multiple contexts giving them a diverse and powerful toolkit to adapt to different situations and understand their own practice from different perspectives.”
“The training session and Meet your Mentor event are very helpful. The training session gave me an idea of mentor’s expectations. It also helped me to set up concrete and achievable goals for the mentoring scheme.
In the meeting event, I had a great conversation with my mentor. He shared his work experiences and his thought on the important things I need, to be a good designer. We also talked about my expectations and made plans on what we are going to do next time we meet.”

“The meet the mentor event was fantastic as it was so relaxed and informal, allowing mentors and mentees to be themselves. Lindy and I couldn’t believe how much we had in common!”
“The match between my mentor and myself seems like a very good fit. Graham and I got on very well and it’s really interesting to talk to someone who has experience working in a variety of different design sectors. We agreed actions and I am now doing some background research on companies in Canary Wharf who have in-house design teams.”
