It was a beautifully sunny morning, and postgraduate students gathered on by the entrance to Queer Britain. Located in Granary Square, Queer Britain is stone’s throw away from CSM’s King’s Cross building and is the UK’s first and only LGBTQ+ Museum.

To celebrate pride month, the Post Grad community invited postgraduate students to an out of hours visit to Queer Britain on Thursday 6 June. As 10am came around, the group was welcomed into the building with a warm smile from Queer Britain’s Communication’s Manager, Katharine Dick (they/them).

As part of the visit, Katharine gave a welcome talk. They took the time to explain who and what Queer Britain is, how the collection and museum started, and why somewhere like Queer Britain is important.

Katharine also gave introductions to the different parts of the exhibition, this really helped us to engage with the objects, documents, costumes, artworks etc. on display.

The welcome talk was engaging and generous, Katharine even shared with the group some of the museum’s future plans. I particularly enjoyed hearing about the museum’s appointment of a new curator, it sounds like they are developing an exciting new curatorial programme, and I can’t wait to see the results!

After the talk, we were left to explore the collection by ourselves. It was a very relaxed environment to meet and speak with fellow post graduate students. Students shared with each other their surprise, joy and intrigue at items on display.

Whilst also, sadly, reflecting on how many display items (especially those connected to protest and community action) are still needed.  The outcomes of a Queer Britain artist residency, where the artist worked with the queer traveller community, provided an important talking point and the resulting queer tarot deck was also very fun.

Thanks to all who came along to the Post Graduate Queer Britain visit. Special thanks to Queer Britain for hosting and Katharine Dick for their welcome talk.
