SURGE II Private Viewing | WITHOUT FORM

SURGE II brought together scientists, artists, and the public to explore the application of technology in surgery.

This collaborative project between UAL’s Post-Grad Community and UCL’s Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) culminated in a week-long exhibition at London College of Communication’s Lower Gallery.

While the live exhibition has finished, Without Form have curated a low carbon online exhibition space to showcase the artwork that has been collaboratively produced between the artists, researchers, and patient groups

SURGE II x WITHOUT FORM

Private View

On Tuesday 10 January 2023, we warmly welcomed artists, researchers, patient groups, and friends to consider the complexities of technology in surgery, covering ethical themes of agency, informed consent, and inclusive communications, as well as the societal implications around inequitable access and improvements in emotional support.

It also marked the first time that artworks from SURGE I were physically displayed. The outcomes produced included 3D prototypes, speculative research, creative support platforms and immersive virtual experiences, evidencing the strength and urgency of collaboration between the creative and the scientific fields

Having them alongside SURGE’s second instalment, we presented some of the common ethical and practical considerations of integrating technology into the care of a variety of patient groups. Furthermore, we began tracing the evolving perceptions of surgical technologies and changing needs of the patient.
