Earlier this month, Helen Cawley MA Art & Science student at Central Saint Martins was selected for the AER residency with LABVERDE in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil happening in August 2018. As a contribution to #EarthDay2018. We asked Helen to share her current research on the planet, and more specifically climate change.

The Art for the Environment International Artist Residency Programme (AER) provides UAL graduates with the exceptional opportunity to apply for short residencies at one of our internationally renowned host institutions, to explore concerns that define the 21st century – biodiversity, environmental sustainability, social economy, and human rights. Through research, studio practice, critiques and mentoring the AER programme is designed to envision a world of tomorrow; to imagine and create work that challenges how we interact with the environment and each other.

Helen Cawley – Clouds at 34,000ft above a marine environment with an infrared camera
“I am currently working with the CLOUD Experiment at CERN investigating the role our atmosphere is playing in climate change. I took the red cloud photos with an infrared camera.
The etchings are work in progress, of 3 types of cloud particles, the images captured in the CLOUD experiment. The ants and wasps pictures are part of my practice of looking at shapes, patterns and chemistry at all scales in nature. I will be continuing this research in the Brazillian rainforest where I will look at how algae from the rainforest becomes part of clouds, and how that helps to cool the planet!”
If you want to keep up to date with Helen’s work, or want to find out more about her research. Feel free to get in touch with Helen via email: h.cawley0120181@arts.ac.uk Or read her winning residency proposal.
