For Emily, studying MA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts involved moving to London from Burton-on-Trent, where she had been working as an artist. Receiving the Frank Bowling scholarship meant that she was in a position to fund her postgraduate degree and devote time to refining her practice.

"My decision to study a postgraduate qualification was fuelled by me wanting to further my creative potential through experimentation and critique.

Before studying my masters, I completed a BA in Fine Art in 2013 and have been working as an artist since then, supported along the way by part-time jobs. Prior to joining UAL, it was important for me that I’d researched any grants or scholarships that I could apply for to support my studies.

I saw that the Frank Bowling scholarship was available and, after applying, was fortunate enough to receive the award! Since I was moving to London, the financial support really helped with the transition.

“I’ve produced a lot of work during my time here, and my course has helped me to critically examine my practice more thoroughly.”

When I did move to the capital, I was astounded by how much there is to do, see and be a part of. We have access to one of the most exciting art scenes in the world, as well as some of the best galleries. Tate Britain is literally next door to Chelsea!

“Making the most of the facilities and opportunities available has allowed me to get the most out of my study experience.”

One of my favourite projects has been creating a video piece, Electric Lady Land, which I then developed into a 3-channel video installation for my solo exhibition at Enclave Lab. This method of installing video was new to me and really brought out the best in the work.

I’ve really enjoyed feeling so connected and engaged with the postgraduate community at UAL. I've made some really useful contacts while in London and feel like being here is the best possible thing for my career at the moment."
