Course description

Course overview

Shoes have always been an integral part of any fashion story, reflecting the influences and moods of the time. In this introductory course you'll learn the fundamental shoe design techniques. You'll be set a mini design project that will illustrate the interactive nature of footwear design and fashion.

Guided by an experienced tutor, this dynamic footwear design course will introduce you to the complete process of creating various styles, including sneakers. You'll begin by investigating how shape and functionality impact design and will master essential techniques for drawing different types of footwear, such as high, mid, and low heel pumps, sandals, brogues, loafers, and boots.

You'll also learn about the last (the mould around which the shoe is formed), heels, and units, along with presentation techniques and bottom construction design, including sock and sole. The course will cover various upper materials and edge treatments to enhance your designs, as well as the different types of footwear constructions used in the industry.

As you gain confidence in your design and research abilities, you'll engage in a project that translates your ideas into a production-ready concept and familiarises you with important technical terms. Please note that this course focuses on design and does not include footwear construction.
